Semi-productive Polysemy and Sense Extension

چکیده
In this paper we discuss various aspects of systematic or conventional polysemy and their formal treatment within an implemented constraint based approach to linguistic representation. We distinguish between two classes of systematic polysemy: constructional polysemy, where a single sense assigned to a lexical entry is contextually specialised, and sense extension, which predictably relates two or more senses. Formally the first case is treated as instantiation of an underspecified lexical entry and the second by use of lexical rules. The problems of distinguishing between these two classes are discussed in detail. We illustrate how lexical rules can be used both to relate fully conventionalised senses and also applied productively to recognise novel usages and how this process can be controlled to account for semi-productivity by utilising probabilities.

The Organization Of The Lexicon: The Polysemy Of Grow And Disambiguation
This paper demonstrates that the polysemy of the verb grow is a result of natural extension of individual meanings connoted by its basic literal meaning and that the polysemy of grow, as such, can be disambiguated by applying simple rules of elimination to the argument structures, which are the contexts that make particular senses viable.
متن کاملUsing Ontologies to Model Polysemy in Lexical Resources
In this article we look at how the use of ontologies can assist in analysing polysemy in natural languages. We develop a model, the Lexical-Sense-Ontology model (LSO), to represent the interaction between a lexicon and ontology, based on lemon. We use the LSO model to show how default rules can be used to represent semi-productivity in polysemy as well as discussing the kinds of ontological inf...

متن کاملRegular polysemy: from sense vectors to sense patterns
Regular polysemy was extensively investigated in lexical semantics, but this phenomenon has been very little studied in distributional semantics. We propose a model for regular polysemy detection that is based on sense vectors and allows to work directly with senses in semantic vector space. Our method is able to detect polysemous words that have the same regular sense alternation as in a given...
